3 NHL Odds & Ends:
The Roaming NHL Players Edition

  • When the Canucks won their game Tuesday night, it was good to see a hard work effort by the whole team, and the outstanding play of Steve McCarthy and Alex Auld in particular. And fortunately our ex-Olympians (the Sedins and Ruutu) were dedicated enough to show up for work on time, so none of their paycheques will be withheld by the team. However, all of the Detroit Red Wings’ Swedish stars did miss work on Tuesday night. If only Ken Holland had planned ahead, he could have shorted all of their pay packages, and bought every Detroit hockey fan a stiff whisky after that San Jose game.
  • So the rumoured Vancouver Canucks trade action is that we are/might be picking up Sheldon Souray? We hadn’t been paying attention to the trade rumours, so this one caught us by surprise during Jim Hughson’s on-air banter Tuesday night. But do we want Sheldon Souray? (okay, maybe) But why wouldn’t Montreal want him anymore? And what would we have to give up? On the other hand, he’s got some useful skills, and a freak of a soon-to-be ex-wife* (*NSFW) that would easily keep the Vancouver media in gossip-heaven for at least the rest of the season.
  • In November we promised a reader we’d provide a link to The Fifth Estate footage about the Mike Danton case when it finally became available. We almost forgot, but here’s the link to the documentary online. (*see right side of page to open media link.) Danton continues his stay in prison for conspiring to murder his agent back in 2004. He maintains he was promised a transfer to a Canadian prison in his plea agreement but prosecutors disagree and he shall continue his stay in the Fort Dix, NJ penetentiary.
