Vancouver Picks Up ROBERTO LUONGO!!!!
Vancouver Trades TODD BERTUZZI!!

[Updates being added to post at bottom]

HOLY CRAP!! I’m a little shell-shocked here…

Says TSN:

The Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers are on the verge of finalizing a multi-player trade involving Roberto Luongo and Todd Bertuzzi, sources have told TSN.

Netminder Luongo is amongst a package that is going to Vancouver in exchange for a package that includes Bertuzzi.

Very few details so far.

Note: I found this out via Kukla’s Korner, just in case you’re not smart enough to check out that site every freakin’ time you go on the ‘net… Man.

UPDATES:
Alex Auld is part of the trade, it seems (see previous link). And all this is happening on a Friday? NOTHING ever happens in hockey on a Friday!! Geezus.

Something to consider - Luongo wanted the hell away from Mike Keenan. (Who wouldn’t?) And Bertuzzi hates Mike Keenan. (Who wouldn’t?) I’m thinking Dave Nonis has sort of screwed Bertuzzi here… A friend just pointed out that Bertuzzi’s salary issues are a big factor.

Honestly I’m not sure what to think right now, except:

(1) Bertuzzi can’t be that happy about this.
(2) Jovanovski might not be traded now (and I really thought he would be).
(3) Is Dan Cloutier now the Canucks’ backup goalie?!
(4) Yeah, that last one was a joke, people. Cloutier is gonna be gone any second now. No $2 million backup goalies happening on this team.
(5) Can’t help but wonder: How soon till Vancouver fans and media destroy Luongo? I like the guy (who wouldn’t?) but we have a way of doing that to goalies ’round here…
(6) Almost missed that Bryan Allen is going to Florida thing (thanks, J.J.!) God, KILL ME NOW.
(7) Mirtle has done some kind of “intelligent” breakdown of this trade. That’s really beyond me right now (or in general) so go and learn something there. (*More from Jes Golbez here. And I agree with most of it…)
(8) “Nonis Pulls the Todd Trigger” - that’s what the front page of Canucks.com’s press release read tonight after this trade ‘leak’ was confirmed around the hockey world. (Dear god, that’s a bad header.)
(9) Dave Nonis Talks about Roberto Luongo, Dan Cloutier, Todd Bertuzzi, and everyone else. From the horse’s mouth tonight.
(10) Lukas Krajicek. New Canuck and presented without my comment. For once.
(11) Canucks assistant coaching staff is fired.

    […] VCOE HOLY CRAP!! I’m a little shell-shocked here… […]

  2. The Acid Queen Says:

A grateful Caniac Nation thanks you for getting Roberto Luongo the fuck out of our Division.

On the other hand, Keenan has officially lost what little is left of his mind.

  3. iwocpo Says:

If Cloutier ends up in Detroit I’m bringing all fourteen of my clubs to Vancouver. I’m going to park outside a certain bookstore and I’m going to chuck every one through the bookstore window.

  4. J.J. Says:

Lidstrom: Hey Dan, remember that goal I scored from center ice? That was funny, huh? Bygones?

  5. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

Don’t even JOKE with me right now IWO. I’m SENSITIVE at the moment!!

    Unbelievable.

And J.J. - mention that goal again on this blog and I’ll hurt you. Or I’ll cry or something. Geez - you’re a Canucks fan. STOP IT!

(dear god, I’m still in shock. where’s the wine…?)

  6. iwocpo Says:

Shit. Lidstrom may not even be around to make that joke, as good as it would be.

  7. miss604 Says:

    WOW … allen? NO!
    Bertuzzi? meh… A
    uld?! Aw man!
WOW!! We just read about this :O

Hopefully Luongo doesn’t start sucking the minute he gets here then once he leaves, does awesome again… a la potvin.
We need the goalie but … ouch ….

  8. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

This is what I’m thinking, 604. We’re HELL on goalies in this town. The Second Coming could come to Vancouver (ie Brodeur) and be destroyed by all of us (and our charming media).

Luongo gets no breaks - and NO obscurity - in Vancouver. Does that change him? It has certainly screwed every other decent goalie…

  9. J.J. Says:

Good thing tequilla shots are $3 tomorrow night.

  10. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

God, if I do tequilla, I might embarass myself. Really, you might not want to see that, J.J. It’s been a LOT of years since I’ve stared down a tequilla shot…

  11. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

Speaking of tequilla - everyone: don’t forget our post-draft party tomorrow night in Vancouver.

I’ll put up a post about it all later. When I come out of my shock…

  12. iwocpo Says:

don’t even start with the tequila talk. i’ve been stranded in the dirty ass richmond airport all day and I just may have to head downstairs and drink this hotel out of business.

  13. miss604 Says:

we had our shot before going grocery shopping :p now we’re back and reading this … doesn’t help much… oof!

  14. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

IWO: the Richmond Airport is probably designed to increase tequilla sales.

604: you guys coming tomorrow night? If not, maybe I can say hi at the draft. Email me if you like!

  15. iwocpo Says:

the richmond airport is a shithole second only to Denver.

  16. J.J. Says:

I’m helluva dancer after a few tequillas. I should apologize in advance if I bust out the sprinkler on the dance floor.

604 - Hope to see you guys there. :)

  17. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

Denver is designed to increase the suicide-rate (if you hate the avs as I do). The Richmond airport only demands alcoholism… Good times! :-)

(BTW, answer my email, IWO, if you’ve got it. I need to post that thing later…)

  18. Youngblood Says:

    Here’s the way I see things…

HUGE upgrade in net. Came out even on D. HUGE upgrade in the room now that you-know-who is gone. Great trade!

And about the goalie graveyard thing, Luongo doesn’t seem like the type to get rattled by media attention. He’s represented his country many times and never cracked under the pressure. In fact, he just might relish the attention after being in FLA for so damn long.

  19. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

Dancing? After tequilla? Geez, J.J., you’re clearly MUCH younger and more together than I am. If I touch the stuff, I’ll need a stretcher.

  20. Temujin Says:

What is this? Christmas in June??? It’s Roberto FREAKIN Luongo man! You should crack a brew and party down like me! Finally we have goalie we can TRUST in net!

I hope Bertuzzi scores fifty goals next year, but he will probably only get 30. Krajicek will do just fine as a replacement for Allen, and we’ve got depth at D anyways. Perhaps we’ll lose Jovo, but more than likely we’ll trade him for a decent D, and if we can trade Cloutier for a forward, we’ll be laughing. Combine that with the fact that the Cap has been increased, and we can afford to sign a 3 million dollar winger, and give Carter a raise.

    Christmas, my friend, Christmas!

PS Keenan was the guy that brought Bertuzzi to Vancouver… Iron Mike likes Todd.

PPS Didn’t Keenan draft both Auld and Allen? I’m not entirely sure but I think he did. This trade makes perfect sense.

  21. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

    Teemujin/Youngblood:

I HEAR what you’re saying, but I’d BETTER not hear about how he sucks next season from you two! I KNOW the first time he blows a game (and he will, no matter how good he is) the Canucks.com forums are gonna go crazy with “horrible goalie, too expensive, trade him, luongo sucks!”

You KNOW I’m right about this. But yeah, Luongo’s a star. I just hope he stays that way!

  22. Youngblood Says:

Ed, I hear ya. I cringe at the thought of it but there will be Luongo haters in this city in no time.

I’m prepared to make a pact with anyone right here, right now to support our new puck magnet for the entire season. Who’s with me!!

Btw, I’ll be at the Gecko after the draft tomorrow night.

  23. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

No one in this freaking city is gonna go for that pact, Youngblood. Hell, I’m just waiting to see how long it takes Gallagher and Pratt to jump ship (although I live in hope). They’re gonna love this deal til November. Then, we’ll see…

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!

  24. iwocpo Says:

Hey…i’m not at home so I can’t read it. send it here and i’ll read it: [email address deleted by vcoe]

  25. J.J. Says:

Dancing? After tequilla? Geez, J.J., you’re clearly MUCH younger and more together than I am. If I touch the stuff, I’ll need a stretcher.

I’m not that young, unfortunately. :|

You know, I’m still in disbelief that one of the top 3 goaltenders in the world is going to be in a Canucks jersey.

    Just wow.

  26. Temujin Says:

Point well taken, VCOE, but shame on you for paying attention the Canucks message board anyways.

I have not known Luongo to blow a game for Florida, and that is saying something. He gave that team a chance to win every single night.

Remember how Colby Cosh, Andy Grabia, and Sacamano from BoA were uber-happy with Roloson after a couple of weeks? Well this blows that signing out of the water. Luongo is to Roloson was Roy is to Red-Light Racicot.

Even if they only have him for one year, they can trade him away for a boatload of talent. But I’m thinking Nonis will talk him into sticking around Vancouver for a while. I was excited about Weinrich/Carney/Noronen, but I am ecstatic about Luongo.

    Party Time!

  27. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

    Temujin:
I swear I barely pay attention to the Canucks message boards. Honestly, I’m pretty sure I’ve been banned… everytime I post something, my ID gets erased.

(Maybe I should quit starting my posts with “Are you dumb fu*king people out of your MINDS?…?”??? Huh… that could be the problem…)

Note: That’s a JOKE, you canucks.com administrator people. I have no idea why you keep wiping out my registrations, and it REALLY irritates me.

  28. Joe Pelletier Says:

Wow. Looks like Dave Nonis took a page from his mentor Brian Burke’s playbook and looked to steal the show on draft day, especially in his own backyard.

As a Canucks fan, I’m sad to see Auld and Allen go, but losing Bertuzzi is addition by subtraction. That being said, he’ll likely have a big year in Florida.

I don’t know much about Krajicek, but Luongo of course is huge news. Pretty risky move given his own contract status.

Needless to say the Canucks have majorly changed their appearance. This almost certainly means Cloutier is gone too, and it’s sounding more and more like Jovo is leaving. Bertuzzi’s absence on RW makes Anson Carter’s resigning even more imperative.

  29. GZ Expat Says:

You couldn’t trade a guy any farther away from Vancouver, than Fla.

Luongo isn’t the happiest of campers about this deal…sounds as though Fla were giving him a bill of goods to stay on board, then poof. Keenan to the core.

A very different team…we all know how well the performed without Bertuzzi when he was suspended. Lets see how they can do it now. They’ve got no size up front…no major centerman to control the play. More moves in the works?

  30. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed » Blog Archive » Whirlwind Draft Weekend - Part 2 Says:

[…] Vancouver Picks Up ROBERTO LUONGO!!!! Vancouver Trades TODD BERTUZZI!! […]

  31. Penny Says:

Trading Bert was the biggest mistake ever made. Even worse than getting rid of Burke which was huge!!!!!

  32. More on Luongo, and Big News with Pronger and Brind’Amour at On the Wings Says:

[…] I would not have liked that if Holland had gone that far. Both Bertuzzi and Luongo will be UFA’s next summer, so I’d have a hard time giving as much up as the Canucks did. Jes Golbez agrees with me. Also, check out the Vancouver Canucks Op Ed reaction here and Mirtle’s reaction here. And if there was a Florida Panthers blog I could link to, and this non-existent blog had a reaction, it would be linked here. Someone start a Panthers blog or drop a link, eh? […]
