VCOE on RadioZoom

Many Vancouverites are familiar with the podcast Radio Zoom hosted by Uncle John and Miss 604.

I’m a long-time listener myself, and kindly enough they invited me to talk hockey on their excellent show this week. John and Rebecca were extremely nice, and made this much easier than I thought it would be. But it was still my first time so I’ll admit to being a bit nervous. (So you must be kind in your criticism!)

Seriously, it was great fun trying something new. I hope some of you will enjoy it.

Update:
I should note that in this interview, I mention the possibility of 25 Canucks games being put on pay-per-view this year. I have no source for that info, it’s just hearsay and could very well be wrong. (God, I hope so, anyway…)

I understand why they Canucks are so interested in PPV, but gee whiz it sure makes it hard on us who still live in the stone age of basic cable.

On the other hand, any excuse to head out to Boston Pizza or another fine establishment for drinks, chow, and the ‘Nucks is fine by me.

  2. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

It gets expensive. Last year I was finally smart enough to just buy the PPV package from Shaw, which saves a couple dollars. But — as BC Canucks fans know — the only way to get the PPV is to pay for the digital cable rather than just the regular cable. (Great scam they’ve got going, no?)

So while the only stations we ever watch are sports channels (The Score, TSN, Sportsnet) and CBC and Newsworld and CTV sometimes, we PAY for about 60 channels. Plus the PPV cost on top of that.

    Drives me crazy.

  3. J.J. Says:

I think there were 20 or 21 games or PPV last year, up from 15-ish the year before, and 10 or 11 the year before.

Some quick math: 13 games on CBC + 5 games on TSN = 18 games

There were 45 games on Sportsnet last season but the rumor is that that number is going down to about 35 as the Canucks are now asking about $250K per game.

For all Canucks games to be broadcast, between 19 and 29 games will be on PPV.

That’s why we go to the bar and watch it for free….and then spend 50 bucks on booze…

Interesting interview Alanah! You were a religious baseball fan? (traitor!)

I couldn’t stand the Canucks and Leaf forums either. Drove me up the wall. It’s what inspired me to check out blogs also.

I suggest buying a ‘Windows for Dummies’ for your huz this Christmas! Funny stuff.

I have to echo what Miss 604 said about google-searching the Hawks/Muppets game all day. I found nothing except for the Kermit hockey card! Dang!

At least John has his head screwed on straight in regards to his comments on Linden still playing (or not). I agree that Carter wants too much, but if no one takes him just prior to the season and his value goes down, it would be good to have a bit of money left to sign him, even if it would be at the expense of Linden. ( I know, every Canuck fan piss on me right about now, I can take it.)

  5. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

No, I was NOT a religious baseball fan! A passive, semi-interested baseball fan!

Glad you enjoyed the interview, Zanstorm. It was a strange new experience, but the hosts made it much easier than I thought it would be. Still, I was nervous, and I thought of better answers to some of their questions after it was over, rather than during… which isn’t terribly useful :-)

  6. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

J.J. – Thanks for the breakdown on the PPV. So I guess the info I heard makes sense.

I could live with it better when it was 10 games — I could understand that they couldn’t always manage a broadcast partner for every game — but this is getting ridiculous.

  7. Zanstorm Says:

Alanah, your answers were good, just not the Linden one answers! LOL!

  8. Zanstorm Says:

    I mean Linden answer…

  9. Earl Sleek Says:

Good work, Alanah, you did great!

Now I want Jar-Jar Ruutu on my team, too!

    “Meesa teammate!”

  10. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

Thanks, Earl. I really appreciate that. But thank god Ruutu isn’t on your team. I’d hate to have to hate the guy. ;-)

At least in the Eastern Conference, I don’t have to think about him too much…

  11. John Bollwitt Says:

Let me just say that I am not against Linden in any way what so ever. :p It’s not that I don’t like the guy or respect him as a player, but the fact that people are very willing to make room for him and not Carter or Kesler makes me fret the season as much as Alanah is. I get the history and not having Linden apart of the team would be huge, but looking at what players like Kesler and Carter did for us last year, it’s tough to ignore.

And maybe it’s not a matter of who should be on the team or not. I’m going to echo what Alanah said in the podcast. I’m uncomfortable with where the money has been spent. Those are three names that I never thought we would be worried about not being around for this coming season.

Of course, I think losing Ruutu hurts me more than the Florida trade. I’ll miss him too! :p

BTW, I’m really glad people have received the podcast well. It just means that we have to do more of this. I had a lot of fun, and it’s great to have a warm reception from the world. :)

  12. Vancouver Canucks Op Ed Says:

    Hiya John–
I think Kesler will get signed. I think Nonis low-balled him on the offer because he either: a) thought he could get away with it, or b) thought it was a good opening negotiating position.

Either way, I think they’ll sign him for somewhere close to $1 mil. Hopefully, because I agree he’s worth it.

About Anson Carter, I’ve said it before that I think the Canucks should have budgeted about $4.5 mil over a 2 year deal for the guy, but obviously they didn’t bother. Then again, would Carter have accepted it, even if they had made that offer? I’m not so sure.

Thanks again for having me on your podcast. A wicked experience and I learned a lot. Let’s do it again!! :-)
